Frequently
Asked Questions About Lifts
What is the best age to have a facelift?
The short answer is when you have something to lift; age range is anywhere
from late 30's at the extreme and there is no real age limit (general
health should be the limiting factor). The trend is definitely younger
and younger - 40 to 50ish.
How long will it last?
5-12 years, depending on genetics and environmental factors and how well
you care for your skin, less for smokers.
How many times can I have it done?
Several, depending on the extent of each procedure and how far apart they
are done (2 or 3 is not unusual).
Will it hurt?
Most patients have some minor discomfort 48-72 hours postop, but pain
threshold varies. Tylenol is often adequate, something stronger may be
prescribed if needed.
Are the scars permanent?
All scars are permanent, but facelift incisions usually heal satisfactorily.
The scar which is the most unpredictable is usually the incision behind
the ear.
How long will it take to heal?
Bruising is usually gone at 3 weeks, but camouflage makeup can be used
as early as 7-10 days to cover any bruising and discoloration.
Will I lose hair?
It is possible to lose some hair, but it usually grows back in 3-4 months.
If you have thinning hair before surgery this should be discussed with
your surgeon preop.
